But let us be absolutely clear on one thing, no matter what he has said in his latest panicked announcement, neither Boris Johnson nor the British government have been on this track from the beginning. In fact, they are extremely late to the party. Our hope – and it is a sincere hope – is that these measures will be enough, but the greatest likelihood is that the gate has been closed long after the horse has bolted. People were always going to die of this virus. There is no way to stop a virus. But Boris Johnson has by his wilful inaction and arrogance set Britain up to fail – and fail bad.
It is completely unnerving that the British government considered this approach in the first place, and we should have all been questioning the expertise of these gormless ‘experts’ the moment Whitty said the British public’s response to crisis was ‘extraordinary outbreaks of altruism,’ and when Vallance suggested, based on an expert sub-group, ‘that people don’t panic, they take what seems like logical decisions based on what they believe.’
When I searched for Mr Browne online – or “Ally Browne” – I found a young man who has devoted much of his time over the past number of years to launching personal attacks on Nicola Sturgeon; at times sharing memes depicting her as excrement, astroturfing the BBC website in an effort to create a link between the SNP and the banned far-right and pro-union group Scottish Dawn, and promoting the Islamophobic hate website Bare Naked Islam on Twitter.
Why the unionist media persists in doing this is becoming increasingly hard to fathom. This is the age of the internet, social media, and instantaneous news. Fewer people every year rely on the mainstream for their news – as a result of shifting age demographics and by a growing lack of trust in how it sources and presents the news. The moment Hugh and Allen’s faces appeared on our screens social media recognised them and outed them, further damaging the credibility of STV and the BBC.
The era of the sick-note has ended. We have well and truly entered the age of “fit to work.” It doesn’t matter if people are fit to work or not, they are being declared fit to work in order to save money, and when people are fit to work in a country where there is no work they are subject to the cutting edge of austerity – the sanctions regime and the foodbank. The purpose of this is to reduce people to destitution, and they are duly complying. Under this pressure people are becoming depressed and stressed; they are getting sicker, suicidal, and dying faster. This was always the plan.
How much of this must we take? How much of this did my friend DefiAye have to take before she ended up where she is today? How widespread is this, and how many people has this been happening to? Perhaps it is time we started working on a national database to help us get a better idea of what is going on. Whoever these people are, they must be brought to justice. We have to make sure they are unmasked and shown to the world for who and what they are.
While this would solve May’s Brexit timetabling headache, it will also put an end to the Good Friday Agreement and result in the resumption of hostilities between the British Crown and an IRA that has never fully decommissioned – for precisely this reason.
When there’s a shark in the water, you see, it’s not scaremongering to tell people so – it’s bloody damn helpful. So we voted No and the NHS is on the chopping block.
