It would be all too easy for me to sit back here in Dublin and comment on social media that this is what’s needed, expecting someone else to answer the call and hit the road. But that would make me part of the problem, another keyboard worrier unwilling to actually act. I don’t want to be that person and I know I don’t need permission: If not me, then who? If not now, then when? So, I have determined to hit the road – to do what I can do to convince people the time is short, to empower people to get back into formation, and to persuade others to do the same.
All we have to combat this insidious beast are the tools at our own disposal. We have the internet; blogs and vlogs, social media platforms, video hosting sites, and so on. Behind these we have a small and growing army of dedicated writers, artists, content creators, and social media wizards. These are people with skills who are learning on their feet the tools needed to address the incessant propaganda of the unionist media and deliver effective and timely counterpunches.
Musing out loud Runnerlicious asked: “Why do most Yesser blogs have donate buttons [and] constantly beg for donations?” – adding that “unionists blog for free.” While the various attempts to answer this question – my own included – quickly descended into squabbling and personal attacks, Julie was asking a fair question; one I hope to answer a little better here than Twitter will allow.
Yes, you read the headline right: Stop giving your hard earned money to charity. Giving and generosity are hugely important virtues in our societies, and God knows there are people and caused that desperately need some help. We all know this, but so do the scam artists who’re out to take your money and profit from it themselves.
One thing has become crystal clear over the past number of weeks in Europe, and that is how easily bureaucratic, political, and economic decisions made at the highest levels of power in the European Union can have traumatic and life-threatening effects on powerless people.
