As royals of the same royal family that did this to Ireland, it would be different had they come to apologise for the barbarity of British rule on this island and for the part Queen Victoria – “the Famine Queen” – played in the utter ruin of Ireland during the Great Famine, but they didn’t. Harry and Meaghan came – as British royals – to play the part of international celebrities, stars we were all expected to flock to see. They didn’t seem to notice how empty the streets were, how so few people turned out to welcome them.

Neither Fine Gael or Fianna Fáil have shown any serious commitment to tackling the homeless crisis. They have been content to have people put onto the streets and leave it to the law to make the victims invisible.

Well done to Dublin City Council and the Gardai for turning up to the bonfire at Teresa’s Gardens to demolish the bonfire and dampen what has been a long-standing inner city tradition.
Why Aren’t We Celebrating the Looters of 1916?
Discussing this less ideological aspect of the rising might be thought by some as a sort of treason; tarnishing the memory of the deeds many in Ireland consider martyrs. Personally, I refuse to believe that violence ever makes martyrs.
